The Texan singer/songwriter is half of Penny & Sparrow, with guitarist Kyle Jahnke his erstwhile guitarist and musical partner. Their first album, 2013’s Tenboom, made great bedfellows with the likes of Mumford & Sons, Bon Iver, and even Iron and Wine, full of quiet spaces and palpable introspection. Struggle Pretty is no different, but perhaps it's a shade more soulful and solid. Baxter is an ace lyricist, and he wears his heart and self-criticism like a badge: “I’m not proud of me/So how could you ever be?” and “I wanna learn to hollow out” are a few of the moving moments here, delivered with a brokenness that's not yet beyond repair. “Bread and Bleeding” feels like a big radio tune waiting in the wings, with soaring, swelling guitars and strings, effervescent percussion, and tidal cellos reflecting bouts of hope. Quieter moments like “Rattle” and “To Haunt, to Startle” hover in the air on muted tympani and piano, strings quivering with uncertainty. A near-flawless collection of intimate, beautiful music. - iTunes

CD Details

Release Date: April 22, 2014

Record Label: independent

UPC: 641444150922

Number of Discs: 1

Vinyl LP edition of Struggle Pretty, the 2014 release from Penny & Sparrow.

VINYL Details

Release Date: April 22, 2014

Record Label: independent

UPC: 616892240945

Number of Discs: 1

Andy Baxter and Kyle Jahnke pare their sound to the bare essentials on Let a Lover Drown You, with crucial assistance from producer John Paul White of Civil Wars fame. Penny & Sparrow's break-through release Let A Lover Drown You (2015) was met with critical acclaim from a wide variety of outlets including NPR Music, Noisey, American Songwriter and Baeble Music. Building on their signature soaring harmonies and introspective lyrics, Penny & Sparrow expand their musical palette both poetically and sonically via their hypnotic arrangements on this album. Baxter delves into themes of love, darkness, urban legends ("Wendigo") and an ambitious trilogy of songs featuring an unusual take on humanizing the Grim Reaper ("Part 1 Visiting", "Part 2 Smitten" and "Part 2 Moniker").
