As with Awry, My Brightest Diamond's debut Bring Me the Workhorse unites elements of rock, classical, and cabaret, showcasing Worden's skills as a classically-trained vocalist and gifted arranger. Her formal training makes itself known in the range and restraint of her songs: operatic vocals and strings are inherently dramatic, but Worden doesn't overdo them. Instead, she uses them just enough to make her modern fairy tales even more evocative. Her shivery singing makes "Golden Star" a standout, while the journey from intensity to serenity on "Something of an End" and "The Robin's Jar" reflect the suite-like movement of many of her songs. While the influences of Björk, Kate Bush, Jeff Buckley, and - in the case of the languid torch song "Gone Away" - Nina Simone, can still be heard very clearly in My Brightest Diamond's music, Worden uses them artfully enough that almost anyone who enjoys those artists will like her work too. However, Bring Me the Workhorse also shows an impressive range of moods and feelings, ensuring that Worden never sounds derivative. "Dragonfly" has all the warmth and weightlessness of a summer breeze, the aptly-named "We Were Sparkling" twinkles like an icicle; and the spooky, late-night rock of "Freak Out" adds a witchy edge. Though the second half of Bring Me the Workhorse doesn't have quite as many memorable songs as the first half does, Worden's way with arrangements, and her sweet-but-powerful voice, make the entire album an eerily beautiful experience. - iTunes

CD Details

Release Date: August 22, 2006

Record Label: Asthmatic Kitty

UPC: 656605829524

Number of Discs: 1

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1398/5745/products/600x600bb_332a1fa6-5cc3-4cf3-b405-6b70c1eb031f.jpg?v=1471615971
my-brightest-diamond-tear-it-down-cd
Tear It Down CD
While this remix record seems like a premature conceptualization - Shara Worden only has one solo album under the My Brightest Diamond name - it's hard to complain with treatments this tricked out and twisted. A Thousand Shark's Teeth is much more orchestrated, polished, and ambitious than Bring Me the Workhorse, and draws even more from Shara Worden's classical training (as well as the work of Maurice Ravel, Tricky, Tom Waits, and painter Anselm Kiefer). The album's elegant instrumentation and arrangements are nothing if not impressive, whether they're relatively simple, as on "If I Were Queen," which concentrates on Worden's immaculate soprano and pizzicato strings, or lavish, as on "Inside a Boy," where chilly strings and keyboards rise to meet Worden's ice princess vocals. However, A Thousand Shark's Teeth sacrifices some of the playfulness and energy that made Bring Me the Workhorse so compelling, and at times Worden's ambitions come close to getting the better of her. "Apples"' plinking percussion - which owes as much to Evelyn Glennie as it does to Tom Waits - makes day-to-day chores like folding laundry sound like performance art, and as eerily lovely as "Black & Coustaud" is, its frosty cabaret whimsy is so theatrical that it vaguely resembles an avant-garde show tune. Strangely, despite the album's elaborate scope, at times A Thousand Shark's Teeth is too subtle to make a strong initial impression. However, when the album does connect - usually when the arrangements and melodies are more direct - the results are stunning. "From the Top of the World" warms up the mostly frosty sonics and resembles a distant, darker cousin of '60s symphonic pop, a feeling echoed by "To Pluto's Moon," which channels John Barry and Portishead into a goth spy theme. "Bass Player"'s smoky sensuality makes it another standout, while "The Diamond" and "Ice & the Storm" are immediately accessible without compromising the album's lofty themes and sounds. Big ambition means the potential for an equally big failure, and while that's not the case on A Thousand Shark's Teeth, the album is sometimes too over-thought for its own good. Arguably, it's more interesting for Worden to bring some of her high art background to a pop context, as she did on Bring Me the Workhorse, than vice versa. As it stands, A Thousand Shark's Teeth is beautiful, more than a little insular, and ultimately intriguing for anyone willing to listen closely. - iTunes

CD Details

Release Date: June 17, 2008

Record Label: Asthmatic Kitty

UPC: 656605604626

Number of Discs: 1

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1398/5745/products/600x600bb_f42775e3-b1ec-40f0-b3b6-3cf756482b3d.jpg?v=1471616078
my-brightest-diamond-shark-remixes-cd
Shark Remixes Volumes 1,2,3 & 4 CD
Limited Edition Double CD (edition of 1500) signed and numbered by Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond. Includes digital download.

None More Than You offers a glimpse of her fifth full-length, This Is My Hand. Shara Worden returns with more of the equally ethereal and cerebral music that earned praise for Bring Me the Workhorse and A Thousand Shark's Teeth, albeit with a few tweaks. Inspired by Top 40 hits as well as her time performing in Matthew Barney's film The River of Fundament and scoring Buster Keaton's The Ballonatic, this is some of her most direct music. She delivers vivid synth pop augmented with harp and woodwinds on the charming "Whoever You Are," the EP's most immediate track. Elsewhere, she proves that a more streamlined My Brightest Diamond still has lots of levels and tangents with two wildly different mixes of "Dreaming Awake." Son Lux's interpretation is dense and beat-driven, giving a claustrophobic edge to lyrics like "I could stay here always/Just watching you breathe," while Mason Jar Music's version emphasizes the song's intertwining brass, giving the impression of an avant-garde New Orleans jazz funeral (that the album version of "Dreaming Awake" is nowhere to be found only adds to the intrigue). The EP's quieter moments - the wintry ballad "Dreams Don't Look Like" and the gentle finale "That Point When" - are more like My Brightest Diamond's previous output, but no less lovely for that. All in all, None More Than You is a tantalizing peek at what This Is My Hand has to offer, and reinforces the feeling that anything might be possible with Worden's return. - iTunes

VINYL Details

Release Date: July 15, 2014

Record Label: Asthmatic Kitty

UPC: 656605634319

Number of Discs: 1

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1398/5745/products/600x600bb_ba74df1b-0d89-49ec-b4fc-f648f3787533.jpg?v=1471616731
my-brightest-diamond-this-my-hand-cd
This Is My Hand CD
During the three years between All Things Will Unwind and This Is My Hand, My Brightest Diamond's Shara Worden pursued arty projects such as scoring a Buster Keaton film and performing in a Matthew Barney film. She also found inspiration in Top 40 hits, and as the None More Than You EP suggested, this unlikely but captivating combination of high art and pop culture delivers some of Worden's most creative and fully realized music. She opts for a restricted - but not restrained - palette of sounds that reflects the album's dualities: rarefied woodwinds, brass, and percussion meet crunching beats, chugging guitars, and surprisingly funky basslines. Her embrace of pop doesn't diminish her music's complexity; instead, she uses pop's deceptively simple tools and tricks to hone these songs into their purest, most dynamic forms, particularly on This Is My Hand's first half. The opening salvo "Pressure" announces itself with a thundering drum line and crisp choral vocals that give Worden's icy, classically trained voice more heft when she sings "all this pressure's making diamonds." It's one of My Brightest Diamond's finest, most exciting songs, and its spirit continues on the title track, where swirling woodwinds and claustrophobic drums make the divide (and unity) between body and soul almost tangible. Meanwhile, the ominously sexy "Lover Killer" and "I Am Not the Bad Guy" explore how love blurs the lines between good and evil as they swing between slinky pop and artier, jazz and classical-informed terrain. This Is My Hand's second half provides the yin to the beginning's yang, but Worden pulls listeners into the quieter songs just as skillfully as she got their attention with the louder ones. "Looking at the Sun" transforms the elements that made "Pressure" so vibrant into something somber and implosive; the dreamlike "So Easy" makes the most of the album's fire and water imagery; and "Shape" even feels a bit meta as it morphs from subdued to forceful. As direct as a touch and as subtle as feelings, This Is My Hand is exciting in a way that's different from Worden's previous work - when she sings "this is my time" on the title track, it's hard not to agree with her. - iTunes

CD Details

Release Date: September 16, 2014

Record Label: Asthmatic Kitty

UPC: 656605610320

Number of Discs: 1

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1398/5745/products/600x600bb_a9135991-65db-4798-8bb3-3eba0832cfb2.jpg?v=1471616759
my-brightest-diamond-this-my-hand-vinyl
This Is My Hand Vinyl LP
Vinyl edition of This Is My Hand, the 2014 release from My Brightest Diamond. Discounted accordingly.

It's not surprising that My Brightest Diamond's second album was originally intended to be a string quartet-based work, or that it was six years in the making.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1398/5745/products/600x600bb_f42775e3-b1ec-40f0-b3b6-3cf756482b3d.jpg?v=1471616078
