More Charlotte Bronté than Jane Austen, the Jurkiewiczes may tackle some of the same girlish themes as their contemporaries, but Taylor Swift they are not, opting for a more timeless, classical, and occasionally existential esthetic that lends each song a subtle yet consistent degree of emotional heft, especially on sterling cuts like the sublime, gospel-tinged opener "Sounds Like Somewhere," the evocative "Devil We Know," and the lucid and engaging first single "Come to Me." The arrangements, more often than not, are as tasteful as the songs are pristine, allowing the sisters' genetic disposition toward harmonic consensus the room to bloom, while introducing the occasional string section, weepy pedal steel, and galloping snare drum, all of which are peppered sparingly throughout, imbuing the album with a warm, '70s soft rock/country-pop patina that evokes images of hall trees strewn with scarves and carelessly hung jean jackets, and dining room tables piled with mail, large vessels of coffee, and half-emptied plates. Semi-decent, rainy Sunday morning records are a dime a dozen, but when they connect, it's like a Bloody Mary-bruised brunch with your best friends, and Lily & Madeleine Jurkiewicz have crafted a moody gem, and one of the most achingly comforting albums of 2013. - iTunes

CD Details

Release Date: October 29, 2013

Record Label: Asthmatic Kitty

UPC: 656605611822

Number of Discs: 1

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1398/5745/products/600x600bb_94a9f302-7abb-4c33-9727-ed9a4b0b2b83.jpg?v=1471616657
lily-and-madeleine-vinyl
Lily & Madeleine Vinyl LP
Vinyl edition of the self-titled release from Lily & Madeleine. The duo's sophomore record, Fumes, is far more expansive than that bare-bones first effort, and in turn the production is far more polished, giving the entire sound a sweetened wash and clarity. However, while the beauty of their debut was in its simplicity and the relatable nature of their youthful stories and innocent lyrics, here - set against a backdrop of strings, a myriad of instrumentation, and the crisp production - their words lose some of their personality and purpose. Yet there are many moments when they do find their feet, and it's among the slower, more pensive tracks that their two-part harmonies really hit the mark. The emotive nature of "Can't Admit It" burns slowly and dutifully refrains from introducing too many distracting elements, leaving the fragile melodies and lyrics to make their mark in devastating fashion. Likewise, the mystic nature of "The Wolf Is Free" flows gently, with swirling instrumentation intersecting the whimsical wordplay and imagery that are lacking on some of the other tracks. It shouldn't be forgotten that the sisters are at such a young and precarious age, and the introspective "Hold Onto Now" poignantly reflects on their fleeting youth, as they lament "hold onto now, as everything's changing soon," trying desperately to hold onto that youthful moment. Comparisons to Swedish folk sisters First Aid Kit still linger in the warmth of tracks "Ride Away" and "Lips and Hips," while "Peppermint Candy" is a straight-up pop song with cute rhymes that match the playful nature of an upbeat track. Overall though, there is far more moodiness and atmosphere on this record, and the album-closer "Blue Blades" draws comparison to the likes of London Grammar with its dramatic, pensive sound. Despite not quite reaching the levels of their eponymous debut, Fumes certainly explores the undeniable talents of Lily and Madeleine Jurkiewicz, and sees them closely explore themselves. - iTunes

CD Details

Release Date: October 27, 2014

Record Label: Asthmatic Kitty

UPC: 656605612829

Number of Discs: 1

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1398/5745/products/600x600bb_b3014e25-f071-40b2-8cc8-e149876c2b71.jpg?v=1471616773
lily-and-madeleine-fumes-vinyl
Fumes Vinyl LP (Clear)
Vinyl edition of Fumes, the 2014 release from Lily & Madeleine. The sisters, who record under the moniker Lily & Madeleine, boldly explore what it means to be women in the 21st century, and aren’t afraid to use their music to call out injustice or double standards. This fearless approach has permeated their three albums, which are full of insightful lyrics and thoughtful indie-pop. But with their fourth studio album, Canterbury Girls - named after Canterbury Park, located in their hometown of Indianapolis - the sisters are coming into their own as women and musicians.

Using an eclectic playlist of songs as sonic inspirations - soul tunes and waltzes, as well as cuts from Midlake, ABBA and Nancy Wilson - Lily & Madeleine worked quickly, recording Canterbury Girls in just 10 days. Although the record contains plenty of Lily & Madeleine’s usual ornate music—including the languid “Analog Love,” on which twangy guitars curl around like a kite twisting in the wind - the album also finds the siblings exploring new sonic vistas. “Supernatural Sadness” is an irresistible slice of bubbly, easy-going disco-pop; the urgent “Pachinko Song” hews toward interstellar synth-pop with driving rhythms, and “Can’t Help the Way I Feel” is an effervescent, Motown-inflected number. Vocally, the sisters also take giant leaps forward. The dreamy waltz “Self Care” is a rich, piano-heavy track on which their voices intertwine for soulful harmonies, while the meticulous “Just Do It” has a throwback, ‘70s R&B vibe.

“This is the first record Lily and I have ever done where we have full control over all of the songwriting,” says Madeleine. “We did co-write with some people that we really love. But everything on this record is completely ours. I feel like I have full ownership over it, and that makes me feel very strong and independent.” With this growing self-confidence and musical poise, it’s clear that Lily & Madeleine are positioned for even greater things going forward.

CD Details

Release Date: February 22, 2019

Record Label: New West Records

UPC: 607396643424

Number of Discs: 1

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1398/5745/products/600x600bb_c4db3612-90ed-48b7-91ea-b1bb52789b5a.jpg?v=1550337901
lily-and-madeleine-canterbury-girls-vinyl
Canterbury Girls Vinyl LP
Vinyl LP edition of Canterbury Girls, the 2019 release from Lily & Madeleine.

VINYL Details

Release Date: February 22, 2019

Record Label: New West Records

UPC: 607396524815

Number of Discs: 1

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1398/5745/files/LM-Vinyl-Standard_720x_f6d1c0cb-f1e2-4bac-adff-25059ffa31ef.png?v=1682798997
lily-and-madeleine-canterbury-colored-vinyl
Canterbury Girls Vinyl LP (Purple Splatter)
Indie Exclusive Purple Splatter Vinyl LP edition of Canterbury Girls, the 2019 release from Lily & Madeleine.

VINYL Details

Release Date: February 22, 2019

Record Label: New West Records

UPC: 607396529414

Number of Discs: 1
