The Christian quintet's sound owes much to British prog-rock, both in its earlier incarnations (Yes, Genesis) and more recent permutations (Coldplay, Travis). Count Me In, Don't Go Away and similar tracks are propelled by torrents of U2-like lead guitar, while lighter tunes like the boisterous Wake Up and the slinky Beginning and the End provide an alternative to the album's sometimes strident tone. Lyrically, Let It Out Now and the title tune stand out for their theme of God-centered nonconformity amidst the materialism of the everyday world. As on their debut, the band proves itself adept in the modern praise realm with such worshipful tracks as Enter This Temple and May Our Praise. Leeland Mooring's lead vocals convey the innocent passion of youthful belief - his awkward-but-plaintive upper range is especially effective on Brighter Days. Ultimately, it's this slightly naïve quality which gives Leeland its own identity and makes Opposite Way a convincing expression of faith. -iTunes

CD Details

Release Date: February 26, 2008

Record Label: Essential Records

UPC: 083061085421

Number of Discs: 1

2012 Grammy Nominee for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album. Leeland invokes the fiery revivalism of 18th-century American minister Jonathan Edwards on The Great Awakening, the Christian quartet's fourth album. The band - now including lead singer Leeland Mooring's sister Shelly on bass - moves away from its original Britpop/progressive rock sound towards an earthier (but still expansive) approach in these tracks. Still central to the group's appeal are Leeland's honeyed tenor vocals and brother Jack's stately keyboard touch, applied to catchy, melodically-rich tunes that work well in corporate worship settings. An inspirational 18th-century poem provides the lyrics to The Great Awakening's title track and sets the tone for the album as a whole. The 11 new songs are centred around the thematic of Psalm 46 through thoughtful and innovative songwriting. Recorded in a live rehearsal room with no audience but special guest artists including TAYA, Charity Gayle, Rita Springer, Vanessa Hill, and Lauren Strahm (Fleurie), an expansive soundscape is captured on each of the new songs. ‘City of God’ unpacks three layers of the project’s foundational Scripture in songs of hope for the midst of trouble, songs of intimacy and safety, and songs of God’s justice. Initially sparked in the chaos of the pandemic, the inspiration is for it to be a prophetic oeuvre making space for meditation. It also captures the profound power of art to invite people inside a divine world brought alive through music, pushing conversations around artistic pursuit forward within the Church.

LEELAND infuse beauty and truth into the culture through their new project, re-telling stories of old with sharp creative flair.
