Proof of his conviction comes in the form of his first solo release, entitled She Must and Shall Go Free. What Webb has accomplished with the opus is a grand statement about love, the church, and life through the eyes of a man that humbly serves Christ. With cuts like the title track and "Lover," Webb paints a rich musical picture with an acoustic brush stroke that floods the canvas. "Nothing" is a country joyride with a honky tonk groove, while the simplicity of the acoustic guitar on "Wedding Dress" drips with reverence. There are so many poignant moments on the opus that each cut tells a story with a bold commitment to truth. The country-tinged "Saint and Sinner" could have come from the Lost Dogs, while "Take to the World" is sung with Jars of Clay's Dan Haseltine, creating an instant pop classic. The theme most visited is the relationship with the church and the frailties of humans. Closing out the disc is the opulent cut "The Church." The tune is sung from Christ's perspective, relaying the need for believers to uplift the church body. The tune is a fitting end to the opus as a piano melody is bolstered by swelling harmonies between Webb and his wife, Sandra McCracken. She Must and Shall Go Free is easily one of the best-written releases of the year. Once again Derek reaches across dividing lines and uses his uncanny lyrical ability and innovative song production to open thought provoking conversation. A convergence of soft acoustic guitar with hip-hop influenced rhythmic sensibilities and a heavy leaning on samples from turn of the century recordings of 'Sacred Harp' (or 'shape note') acapella recordings, Ctrl is the next evolutionary step forward for an artist who is constantly experimenting, challenging conventions of genre and style. Morally challenging and musically innovative, Derek Webb takes yet another bold step with Ctrl, shifting from the electronica-based sounds that have dominated his work in recent years toward a striking blend of acoustic and synthetic instrumentation. Webb's singing harks back to the folksy sweetness of his work with Caedmon's Call, tempered by a greater sense of maturity and experience. Samples of sacred harp choirs and delicate guitar work contrast with techno beats and ambient textures to create a mood at once exalted and unnerving. The title is an emphatic statement about the liberation and ultimate security of the people of God - the church - taken from the last line of a 175-year-old hymn writted by William Gadsby. As Derek approached this 10-year anniversary, he began to wonder what the album would have looked like if he were writing it today, exploring the relationships between the church, the culture and himself. "I wondered about the observations, encouragements, criticisms and confessions I would discover if I asked these same questions 10 years later." The result is a new album - I Was Wrong, I'm Sorry & I Love You. "I grew up hearing that these were the three things you must learn to say in order to sustain any relationship - be it a friendship, a marriage or a church community," says Webb. This new album is easily the most confessional and autobiographical work of Webb's career. I Was Wrong, I'm Sorry & I Love You feels like a return to strength, a rest from running, and an encouraging start to what Derek hopes to be 10 more years of "afflicting the comfortable and comforting the afflicted," starting, as always, with himself. - provident

CD Details

Release Date: September 03, 2013

Record Label: Fairtrade

UPC: 736211608390

Number of Discs: 1

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1398/5745/files/Derek_Webb_I_Was_Wrong_I_m_Sorry_I_Love_You_CD.jpg?v=1757021858
webb-derek-kill-dvd
How To Kill and Be Killed DVD
How to Kill and Be Killed is a live concert DVD from singer-songwriter Derek Webb.
