Brooke Fraser

Brooke Fraser is a New Zealand-born singer-songwriter known for her warm, folk-inflected pop sound and deeply personal, often faith-inspired lyricism. Her album Albertine, named after a Rwandan girl whose story moved her profoundly, became a landmark in contemporary Christian and indie pop music. Collide Records also stocks Flags and Brutal Romantic, showcasing her evolution as an artist across rich acoustic balladry and polished, anthemic pop production.

The early 21st century has seen a wave of female artists that seem to have been influenced by Tori Amos, but have given Amos' piano-heavy approach a much more apparent pop spin. Case in point, Brooke Fraser, and her 2008 U.S. debut, Albertine. Already quite popular in her homeland of New Zealand (where her 2003 debut, What to Do with Daylight, has spawned several hits and awards), Fraser's sound is quite similar to U.S. pop artists of the American Idol era. No doubt Fraser certainly possesses a heck of a voice (as evidenced by such tracks as "Deciphering Me"), and can also cook up tunes that should have no problem crossing over to the upper reaches of the U.S. pop charts (the slightly Norah Jones-ish "Lover, Where is Your Fire"). However, as with the majority of pop/rock acts of the modern era, there's nothing all that musically groundbreaking that would make Albertine stick out from the rest of the pack. That said, as her first domestic release, Albertine does indeed show great promise, and could certainly serve as a building block towards something special. Keep your peepers peeled. - iTunes

CD Details

Release Date: May 27, 2008

Record Label: Wood & Bone

UPC: 634457400122

Number of Discs: 1

New Zealand native Brooke Fraser's literate lyrics and wistful melodic bent show an increasing maturity, while her sweet, slightly aching voice conveys fragility with great underlying strength. Fraser moves beyond the introspection of 2006's Albertine to paint more diverse portraits and scenes. Her musical palette is rich and diverse - Jack Kerouac percolates with Afrobeat guitar lines, providing contrast to the glistening arctic tones of Ice On Her Lashes. A rush of happiness animates Something In the Water (a head-over-heels love tune) and Coachella (a buoyant celebration of unity through dance and music). Love of a more complicated kind is explored in the tormented yet melodically graceful Who Are We Fooling (a duet with Aqualung's Matt Hales). Fraser snatches hope out of pervasive darkness in Crows & Locusts and offers a character sketch of a lonely woman in Betty. Her Christian outlook shines through in the moody, Daniel Lanois-like title tune.
